If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

How the progress estimate works

The reading guide gives honest estimates of how long it might take to read a book, based on word count and a typical reading pace. The median reading time here is about 224 minutes, or roughly 3.7 hours, but books range from under an hour to over 14 hours.

These estimates are approximate. Your actual time will depend on your reading speed and how closely you engage with the text. Use the guide to plan your reading sessions or to choose a book that fits your available time.

Quick Reads

Books under 20,000 words, often readable in under 90 minutes. Examples include 'The Old Humanities and the New Science' and 'Education as Service'.

Steady Reads

Books between 20,000 and 50,000 words, typically taking 1.5 to 3.5 hours. 'Construction Work for Rural and Elementary Schools' fits here.

Immersive Reads

Books from 50,000 to 100,000 words, requiring 3.5 to 7 hours or more. 'The Organisation of Thought' and 'Special Talents and Defects' are in this range.

Marathon Reads

Books over 100,000 words, such as 'Parents and Children' or 'The Goose-step', which may take 10 hours or more.

Reading Tracker

Making Progress One Page at a Time

The Reading Tracker is a simple tool for steady progress. It records your current page, the total pages in the book, and a daily page goal you set. It does not track minutes or sections; pages are the only unit of progress. That keeps the plan clear and easy to follow.

Setting Your Daily Goal

The default daily goal is 20 pages. That is a reasonable starting point for many readers. If you know you can read more, you can raise it; if 20 feels too much, lower it. The goal is yours to adjust.

The tracker estimates finish days by dividing remaining pages by the daily goal. For example, Construction Work for Rural and Elementary Schools — Story, Setting & Ideas has about 25,286 words. At 250 words per page, that is roughly 101 pages. With a 20-page daily goal, you would finish in about 6 days.

Adjusting the Total Pages

The initial page estimate is based on the word count divided by 250 words per page. That is a convenient standard, but it may not match your edition. If your reading app or printed book shows a different total, you can replace the estimate. This makes the tracker accurate for whatever format you are using.

For Construction Work, the estimate is 101 pages. If your edition has 120 pages, you would change the total to 120. The estimated finish days would then be 6 days at 20 pages per day, or 5 days if you read 25 pages daily.

Tracking Your Progress

The tracker stores your history in your browser's local storage. No account is needed, and your data stays on your device. You can update your current page as you go, and the tracker recalculates the remaining time and finish date.

Estimated remaining time is proportional: if you have read half the pages, half the estimated reading time is left. This is a rough guide, not a promise, but it helps you plan.

A Practical Example

Construction Work for Rural and Elementary Schools — Story, Setting & Ideas is a 25,286-word book with 5 text sections. At 250 words per page, it is about 101 pages. If you set a goal of 20 pages per day, you would finish in 6 days. If you prefer a slower pace of 10 pages daily, it would take 11 days. The tracker lets you see these options at a glance.
